Top ten free resources for writers
It is often assumed that the art of writing is simply a matter of talent. While talent is definitely important, it is useless if one doesn’t develop their craft. This can be expensive, but there are many superb resources that are available for free on the internet.
Here is a list of my top ten:
University of Iowa IWP – MOOC Packs (Massive Open Online Course) – videos, assessment tasks, practice sheets, recommended readings – all free!
The Crafty Writer – a service that helps teach aspiring and current writers how to improve their craft.
The Open University – Start Writing Fiction – this course in its entirety charges for the qualification but a significant part is for free. If you are at the beginning of your writing journey, this is an invaluable source.
The Thoughtful Bro podcast – The host, Mark Cecil asks all the right questions of the authors, and the advice they give is truly amazing.
Writers Write – this website has a large number of free resources and several free courses.
Authors Publish – They have a weekly newsletter which includes submission opportunities as well as useful articles written by writers. They also conduct monthly video presentations with writers, poets, publishers, agents.
Writing Excuses podcast – short, 20-minute podcast episodes that tackle various issues, from point of view, to cooking as a metaphor, to interviews, to various lenses in the editing process.
Writing.ie – a magazine for writers by writers. The number of resources available here covers aspects from the world of writing and publishing
NewPages.com – a guide to literary magazines, indie bookstores, indie publishing, creative writing programs, writing and literary events, calls for submissions, and more.
Poets and Writers – contains a large variety of information, announcements and fosters a culture of sharing and belonging to a community.
